When Your Baby Has Cold Hands

What Helps Against Cold Hands and Feet in Babies?

Does your baby wake up with cold hands at night? Cold hands are very common in newborns and babies. The reason: the body prioritises blood flow. This means the brain and heart are supplied with blood first, while the extremities come later. That’s why blue hands and feet in newborns are nothing unusual.

Cold hands in babies: Why skin discolouration can happen

How long do babies have blue hands or feet? For some babies, this temporary discolouration can appear on and off throughout their first year. But don’t worry – it’s not dangerous. Many adults will remember the feeling of cold hands and feet themselves! So let’s reassure Grandma: Cold hands do not necessarily mean your baby is too cold!

Cold hands in babies: How to tell if your baby is cold

Here’s how to check if your baby is actually cold and may need an extra layer:

  • Feel your baby’s nose. If it’s cooler than your hand, it’s a sign your baby might need another layer of clothing.
  • The neck is where babies first show signs of overheating. If the back of the neck is warm or damp, you may be able to remove a layer.

What helps against cold hands in babies?

When you’re outside, remember that little hands and feet get cold very quickly. That’s why I especially recommend warm mittens and booties in autumn and winter to keep your baby’s extremities cosy and protected.

When using a pram during the colder months, a lambskin footmuff is your best friend. It provides excellent warmth over your baby’s outfit and maintains a natural temperature balance. Your baby should also wear a warm hat at all times. Since babies tend to stretch their hands out in the pram, don’t forget their mittens.

Winter outings with baby: My top tips

On very cold days, you can pre-warm your lambskin footmuff with a hot water bottle placed at the foot end. Just make sure it’s sealed tightly and well-secured.

Avoid using cold-weather creams in your baby’s first year. Instead, a rain cover on your pram makes a great winter wind barrier – it keeps warm air inside and allows for longer walks even when it’s freezing. Fresh air is great for both of you!
